Bagheera are powered by either 1200-cc 84-hp or 1400-cc 90-hp transverse-mounted, carbureted, inline-four engines, both of which were existing Simca units. The only transmission available was a Simca 4-speed unit from their sedans. Body panels were hefty fiberglass, over a pressed-steel unibody-style frame.

The Bagheera U8. Prototype U8 engine. In March 1973 a team of Matra engineers led by Georges Pinardaud completed the initial design for project M560, which was to be a more powerful Bagheera. [3] A key part of the project was the creation of a unique "U engine" out of two existing Simca straight-4 engines.. Matra who always had been keen to accomodate more than 2 seats, now settled for a 3 seater solution, and the Matra-Simca Bagheera was born (in fact named after the panther in the Jungle Book). Matra considered a central driving position (as the McLaren F1 has it today) but abandonned the idea, presumeably because it would inhibit reuse of parts.
